The Third Pick Is the Last One
Where the commitment stops being a commitment
The Value of a Move Is Its Risk
A move is worth the same as the risk it takes, and the risk dies on the third pick, which is the whole economics of the format in one sentence. The first pick of the shout is a commitment, because the crowd has not seen it yet and the crowd is the judge, and the second pick is a repeat, which still costs something, because the repeat is a statement that the first one did not land, and the third pick is the overtry, and the overtry is where the move stops being a move and starts being a habit, and the habit is what the crowd punishes, not with silence, which would be respectful, but with the cringe, which is the count turned against the player, the applause that counts the difference and finds that the difference is now in the wrong direction.
The Numbers That Carry It
The simulation builds the dying into the score, and the dying is the rule. A move picked once is worth its full value, the second pick is worth less, because the repeat is the statement, and the third pick is worth less still, and the fourth is the overtry, where the value goes under the floor and the cringe starts counting. The crowd is the second judge in the system, the one that reads the repeat before the player notices it, and the read is the penalty, because the crowd does not wait for the move to die, it counts the dying as it happens, which is the speed at which the format actually runs, faster than the player's sense of when the move stopped being a move.
What the Card Reports
- The record: the rounds won, the applause total, and the rounds the overtry cost, the ones lost to the repeat that stopped being a bet.
- The move that carried you: the one that did the winning, which is the move, not the habit, and the card names it, because the name is the record.
- The cringe count: the picks that landed under the floor, the overtries the crowd counted, which is the number the plaza keeps and the feed quotes, because the overtry is the part of the clip that stays.
Run the three rounds and watch the value of your favorite move die on the second pick. That is the game, and that is the rule, and the rule is the one the format invented before it had a name, the third pick is the last one, and the fourth is the one the crowd counts against you.
Watch the Value Die
Pick the move you would pick twice, and the second one is worth less, and the third is the floor, and the fourth is the cringe. The card keeps the record, the carrier, and the cringe count, in the order the plaza reads them, the win, the move, and the overtry that did not land.
