The Three Tests a Move Has to Pass
Commitment, cost, and the crowd's read
The Move Has to Cost Something
The test is not whether the move looks good, it is whether it costs something to do, because the cost is the commitment and the commitment is the value. The shout costs the voice, and the voice is the thing that is hard to take back, and the jaw costs the stillness, and the stillness is the thing that does not recover fast, and the hand costs the meaning, and the meaning is the thing that does not come back when the crowd stops counting it. A move that costs nothing is not a move, it is a habit, and the habit is what the third pick is made of, which is why the value dies where the cost ends, and the cost is the number the card is built on.
Playthrough Notes
- The opponent is generated each run, a profile with a favorite and a fear, and the favorite is the move the opponent picks when it is ahead, and the fear is the one it will not pick, and reading the two of them is the round, because the crowd counts the difference and the difference is where the opponent's favorite meets your floor.
- The repeat is the trap, because the move you won with is the move you reach for, and the reach is the second pick, and the second pick is worth less, and the third is the floor, and the floor is where the cringe starts counting. The game shows the value of the move you are about to pick, so the cost is visible before the pick, which is the read the crowd does on the street, the one you are doing on the card.
- The rare moves unlock on the win, the two that sit above the line, and the unlock is the reward for the round, not for the repeat, because the repeat is the thing the unlock is built to punish, the one that says the next move has to be a new commitment, not the third one of the old one.
Run the three rounds and watch the value of the move you love die on the second pick. That is the whole training, and the card is the record, the win, the carrier, and the cringe, in the order the plaza reads them.
The Card, Read
Four numbers: the record out of three rounds, the applause total, the carrier move, and the cringe count, the overtries the crowd counted. The record is the win, the applause is the crowd, the carrier is the move, and the cringe is the repeat, and the four of them are the card, which is the whole battle in the order the plaza reads it.
