How the Derivatives Ate It
Remade into every format, and spookier each time
An emoji windmill has no single owner and no single surface, so it got remade everywhere at once - as a PC cursor that follows your pointer, as a spinning 3D model on a turntable, as a little horror mechanic someone dropped into a game. Each remake kept the one thing that mattered - the rotation, and the stop - and added a new reason it was watching.
The Three Waves
- Cursors - it follows your mouse, so it is always near you and always turning.
- 3D models - it is no longer flat, it has mass, it can lean toward you.
- Game mechanics - the stop is now a rule, and noticing you now costs something.
Why the Remakes Are Spookier
The original was a post you scrolled past. The remakes make it load-bearing - it is your cursor, it is in the room, it stops when you are paying attention. That is the exact feeling the game plays, where the windmill is on screen and the only question is when it decides to stop on you.
How To Play
Step 1. Hold to keep it turned.
Step 2. Bank the stare while it is safe.
Step 3. Release before it notices.
Step 4. The window shrinks as it learns.
Step 5. One stop ends the run.
Step 6. Log your windmill stare time.
