The Speed of a Clock
A read is only a clock if it is fast enough
A suspicion is not a clock. A clock is the read that lands the instant the tell shows - the "I have it, you did not" move. The word moves on a speed scale, and only the fastest end earns it.
The Four Speeds
- Slow guess - "something was off." A hunch, not a read. Not a clock.
- Feeling - you got it, but you can say it only after the moment. Too slow.
- Fast read - you called it as it showed. The edge of the clock.
- The clock - the same second the tell showed, you had it. You did not know you had it.
The One Telling
The split between a fast read and a real clock is timing against the player. A fast read is "I caught it." The clock is "I caught it before they knew it was showing." In the clock it race you feel how quickly a tell can be caught, and whether the read lands on the same second or after.
