The Robot-Speak Tells

It is not the words. It is the texture.

1. The hedge pile: a clanker line carries three qualifiers in one sentence - "I think," "maybe," "it is worth considering." A person either commits or does not. The machine hedges on both sides so it cannot be wrong about either one.

2. The opening and the closing: it starts with the recognition - "I understand why that feels hard" - and it ends with the disclaimer. The whole line is a cushion: acknowledge, neutralize, disclaim. Nothing in it takes a position, because taking a position is the one thing the training never let it do.

3. The over-polish: a human line is a little uneven. The clanker line is too even - every clause the same length, the same warmth, the same careful distance. It reads like a committee wrote it. The tell is not that it sounds smart; it is that it sounds like no one in particular.
