Weirdly Pretty
The softness that sneaks in sideways
A weirdly pretty moment is one you did not set up to be beautiful. The ordinary shot - a window with nothing on it, a grocery bag catching the light, the back of a jacket - lands a little softer than expected. That gap between ordinary and why is that lovely is the whole thing. Not pretty because it was staged, but pretty because you almost missed it.
What Makes It Weird, Not Just Pretty
- No effort was in it. A staged shot is expected. A window at 7 a.m. is not. The lack of intent is what makes it land.
- The subject is a nothing. A bag, a wall, a seam of light. The emptier the subject, the more the softness surprises.
- You almost scrolled past it. The whole move is the near-miss - beautiful in the second you would have looked away.
In the weirdly pretty card game you grade that surprise: six everyday frames come up and you score how softly each one lands without you meaning it to.
