Smash Bros Boast
The taunt that does not fit the dancer
The smash bros boast is the cheerful, almost childlike taunt - I will beat you up in the game - paired with a character who would never step foot in it. The coffee-gulp dancing man, the hedgehog, the whole absurd lineup. The joke is the mismatch: the line is a confident challenge and the face doing the choreography has zero business being there.
Why the Mismatch Works
- The line is childlike, the dance is not. A kid's boast wrapped around an adult, deadpan movement is the gap the whole thing sits in.
- The character has no business there. The funnier the face is out of place, the more the taunt lands. A character that belongs in the game would kill it.
- The confidence is the point. No one is actually threatening anyone. The boast is a performance, and the performance is what gets remixed.
In the pick-the-least-likely game you do the same read as the remix does - which of the faces is the one that least belongs in the ring, and how fast you can feel the gap before the timer runs.
