The Two-Face Template

The format is 21 seconds, and the whole joke fits in the first two beats.

Every run of the Smalltown Boy two-face template is the same 21 seconds with two variables. Beats one and two: the first face fills the frame, lunges, and mid-shout - then cuts. The second face does exactly the same thing, and the two beats being identical is the setup. From beat three on, the pair moves together for the rest of the run, and the run's character is decided by two dials that the whole wave tunes:

The template's tool side - the week's dedicated generators, including the cat-dance variant - runs both dials automatically. What the game runs instead is the judgment: the dials are yours, and the pairing challenge is the test of whether you can read the drift before the run does it.

Why the pair, not the dance. A solo face on the track is a clip with good music. Two faces on the track are a relationship the viewer is placed next to - and the relationship is whatever the pairing happens to be. That is why the format outlives the tooling: a person and a cat, two characters, a person and a toy all make the 21 seconds, and the lurch beats carry the same weight in all of them. The meme wiki's entry treats the template as a shape rather than a tool: faces in, one run out, the two dials doing the character work.

The game's reading of it. The page keeps the 21-second structure and compresses it to a playable run: the two lurches, then the synchronized stretch, with the mechanical and drift dials driving exactly what they drive in the real one. The pairing challenge gives five pairs and asks the one question the format is actually built around - does this pair lock, or does it wander? - and the duet card is the score of that read plus your own pick from the face rack. No AI, no upload, two CSS faces and a song's tempo.
