Smalltown Boy Dance Guide

A 1984 track, a scene from a true-crime series, and the 21 seconds of two faces that came out of it.

Where the track came back from: Smalltown Boy is a 1984 synth-pop single by the group Bronze, and for most of its life it was exactly what the title says it is - a small-town song. Two things moved it: a two-person dance scene inside a Netflix true-crime series that replayed the chorus in slow motion, and the week in early October when the template stopped being a clip and became a prompt - upload two faces, and a tool makes the first one lurch at the camera mid-shout, the second repeat it, and the pair lock into the synchronized, mechanical dance for the rest of the run. A meme wiki logged the template week; the format since travels by its two numbers: 21 seconds, and two faces that do not need to be human.

Why two faces is the whole trick. The template's value is not the dance - it is the pairing. One face reads as a clip; two faces read as a relationship, and the relationship is whatever the two faces happen to be: a person and a cat, two characters, a person and a toy. The first two beats of the 21 seconds are each face taking a turn at the camera - the lurch, the shout - and the rest is the pair moving together, which is why the whole format is judged on two dials: how mechanical the motion is, and how far the two are allowed to drift. Sync at the top reads as choreography; drift at the top reads as two people doing the same thing badly, which is the funnier of the two and the one the wave shares more.

The game: a zero-AI version of the same template. Pick two faces from the preset rack - the game's face library covers the same range the template allows, including the non-human ones - and the page plays out the 21 seconds as a compact animated run: lurch, lurch, then the dance, with your two dials doing exactly what the real one does. The pairing challenge is the other half: five given pairs, and the call on each is whether the generated run syncs or drifts. The duet card is the number that says which kind of pair you run.
