Glazing Levels
Where the praise actually lands
Not every line of praise is glazing, and not every glaze is the same off. The word moves on a scale, and where the compliment sits tells you how far it has run from the thing it is describing.
The Four Levels
- On target - the compliment names a real thing. Clean, no notes.
- Sliding - a little extra, the praise is starting to run ahead. The edge.
- Off the ledge - the compliment is doing its own thing now, no longer about the subject.
- Full glaze - the shine has no point, it is just the coat.
The One Telling
The split between sliding and off the ledge is specificity. Sliding is "you are a lot, I mean in a good way." Off the ledge is "you are the best I have ever seen at this" with no backing. When the praise stops pointing at a thing, it is off the ledge. In the glazing meter you feel which of the four a line is doing.
