How the Schoolyard Became a Scoreboard
The generation that grew up inside games now grades the people around them in game terms.
The shift: a few years ago "main character" was an aspirational meme. Now it is a category. The school day runs on two lanes - main-character moments that earn the scene's attention, and NPC moments that go unregistered. The insult "you are NPC" lands because it is not a mood, it is a ranking.
Why gamification stuck: Gen Alpha is the first cohort for whom a scoreboard is a native language. Every social exchange can be read as an XP gain or an NPC miss. That is not a cruelty - it is a translation layer. They are describing the social scene the only way that feels precise to them.
The "NPC" test: an NPC moment is one nobody would rewatch. A main-character moment is one that gets re-shown in a group chat by a third person. The detector in this game plays exactly that distinction - would someone have recorded this, or would it have gone by?
