Ghost Filter Guide

A scare with a countdown, three reactions to choose from, and a ghost that is the joke instead of the fright.

Where the trend came from. The October wave is the Ghost Filter trend: a parent puts a camera on the child, asks the child to say a line to the camera - a hello, a something-about-mom - and then runs a filter that puts a ghost behind the child, and the clip is the reaction, whatever it is. The reporting that logged the wave (a parents' site in the fourth week of the month) made the criticism part of the story: the clips read as frights being staged on a kid for the view count, and the replies to the clips said the same thing. What the wave kept, and the only part the game version keeps, is the structure underneath: a countdown, a surprise behind you, three possible reactions, and the reaction as the content.

The safe version keeps the structure and swaps the ghost. The filter's ghost is the scary part, and the safe version changes exactly that one thing: the ghost that shows up is not the fright - it is the funny. A friendly ghost, a silly one, an abstract one, and the three reactions to pick are the laugh, the ignore, and the staged scare. The scoring follows the safe prank's tone: the reaction that matches the ghost wins, and the match is the point. That is the whole deconstruction - same camera, same countdown, same three reactions, one different ghost. The generator is the shareable part: pick a color, a shape, and a face, and the card is the friendly ghost you built.

The card. Five rounds, each with a ghost you did not build and a reaction you pick in three seconds, and the score is the matches - the rounds where your reaction fit the ghost instead of fighting it. The camp on the ghost card says how the round went: the top camp matched all five (the wave's own laugh-out-loud clip), the mid camp matched three (the staged scare that read as a joke), and the bottom camp fought the ghost all five rounds - which is the wave's own first-clip camp, the one that ended in a cry.
