Building Your Own Apology Deck
Three types of black history, and how the game plays
Find the Type You Actually Have
The corpus keeps the black history in three drawers, and the apology is easier when the drawer is named. The craft failure is the thing you made, the mask held together by hope, the cape that was not the material it pretended to be. The color betrayal is the outfit that worked in daylight and stopped working at the party, the shade that chose a different dress than the one you did. The character misunderstanding is the costume that was supposed to read one way and read another in every photo, the look that introduced itself as something it was not. Pick the drawer before you pick the photos, because the apology is written to the drawer, not to the dress.
Playthrough Notes
- The eight pairs run left-to-right, good card first, real card second, and the three-second window is the whole call. The window is short on purpose, because the reveal in the deck happens in one turn of the slide.
- A miss shows the tell, the one detail that separated the two cards. Read the tell, because the next pair is built on a different one, and the tells do not repeat across the set.
- The generator asks for the drawer, not the photo. The apology copy is written to the type, and the share card is the deck's last slide, the line over the real one, kept as a card.
Run the eight calls once fast and once slow. The fast run is the audience's read, the slow run is the detail's read, and the gap between them is where the detector lives, the same gap the deck is built to close in one slide turn.
The Card
Two numbers and one line: the call rate out of eight, the drawer you confessed to, and the apology the generator wrote for that drawer. The line is the quote, the way it always is in the deck.
