When The Mask Slips

Three tells that make a claim too thick to hold.

1. The over-reach: the person claims the top of the role - not "I work in the kitchen" but "I am the head chef, I run this place." The claim is bigger than the evidence, so there is a hole somewhere. Every hole is a place the call-out can slip in.

2. The gap: the role says one thing and the knowledge says another. The "local" who cannot find the shop that has been on the same corner for thirty years. The "expert" who gets the first question wrong. The gap between what the role should know and what the person actually knows is where the mask is.

3. The defensive answer: when the claim is met with even a small doubt, the real role shrugs it off and the fake role argues. The defensive "why would you say that?" is the tell. A person who is who they say they are does not need to defend it. The call-out lands on the defense.
